Upper College Curriculum

In our Upper College there is a core curriculum for all students of:

English
All students currently study English Language leading to one GCSE and the majority study English Literature leading to a second GCSE.

Mathematics
All students study Mathematics leading to one GCSE and some also study Additional Mathematics or Statistics leading to a second GCSE.

Science
There are two main pathways offered in science:

  • GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • GCSE Core and Additional Science

Which pathway a student follows will be negotiated based on their attainment in science during their time in Upper College.

PE
All students continue with Physical Education in Upper College and a variety of activities are offered. There are also opportunities for accreditation, for example Sports Leaders award.

PSHE
Students continue their PSHE studies in form time and during assemblies.
More information on the core curriculum and the approach to learning can be found in the Core Booklet that is on this page.

Option subjects
Pupils choose which subjects they wish to specialise in for their studies in years 10 and 11 in the main options.

These are organised in three pathways:

Pathway 1: The English Baccalaureate

The English Baccalaureate is a nationally recognised standard achieved by pupils who are successful in gaining a GCSE at C or above in the following subjects:

• English • Mathematics • Science • History or Geography • Modern Foreign Language.

Pathway 2: GCSEs

GCSEs will be the main type of qualification pupils will study in the options. They are awarded from grades A* to G and are therefore suitable for all pupils. GCSEs will be assessed by exams at the end of the course. For some subjects there will also be controlled assessments during the course.

Pathway 3: BTEC Firsts/Vocational qualifications

Some pupils may feel more suited to study some of their subjects as a BTEC First qualification which is equivalent to one GCSE. This will be similar to the GCSE but will be more practically based and have more elements of coursework broken down into bite sized chunks.

A minority may also consider a more vocationally orientated qualification such as Level 1 or 2 in Construction, Catering or Motor Vehicle.

The option subjects
At EWS we offer a wide range of GCSE subjects in the options which are described in the Pathways booklet on the link above. Pupils follow four main option subjects and an enhancement option. You can find these in our Pathways booklet which you can download from this page.
